From the City to the Woods: Restaurants Taking Pride in the Hudson Valley’s Bountiful Harvest

Getting out of the city and exploring the woods is the greatest way to experience the Fall season. We are introducing you to some of our favorite new and notable restaurants in Upstate NY where the Chefs take pride in the abundance of produce the Hudson Valley has to offer. Mix in some nature this October with some delicious meals all sourced with local ingredients supporting your neighboring farmers.

Casa Susanna

Casa Susanna, located at Camptown Catskill is a Mexican restaurant from Chef Efrén Hernández where he takes pride in sourcing ingredients from the Hudson Valley and incorporating his family’s history and traditions through his dishes. When you arrive at Camptown, you will smell the masa being made for homemade white Chalqueno corn tortillas that are offered regularly with a seasonal changing menu. The cocktails are equally delicious.

Matilda

Matlida is located in the newly renovated Henson Inn in Hensonville, NY. Matlida is inspired by the beauty of The Catskill Region and the farmers who take pride in their meats, produce, dairy, and sustainable practices. Chefs Jeremiah Stone and Fabian von Hauske Valtierra who previously ran the kitchen at Contra and Wildair in NYC are running the food program at Matlida. Some dishes to expect and the Ravioli with chantarelle mushrooms, smoked steelhead trout with nori puree and amaranth, and Highland Hallow Striploin with cabbage and tarragon.

Stissing House

Stissing House, build in 1782 served as a Tavern and bed for travelers in Pine Plains, New York. In 1995, it reopened as a French restaurant where it became a staple to the community. Now, Chef Clare de Boer, formerly from King continues to preserve the historic landmark while keeping to its roots and minimalistic charm. The menu is always subject to change with the seasons, and they frequently have events where they host dinner parties to gather likeminded individuals to enjoy a delicious meal.

Lace has lived most of her adult life in NYC working in Hospitality. She has worked almost every position you can work in restaurants and immersed herself in the culinary world where her main passion lies. When she isn't finding your perfect restaurant to go to on a Friday night, she is at the farmers market gathering produce to thoughtfully prepare a home cooked meal while sipping on a negroni and lending an ear to some of the greats like Nina Simone and Billie Holiday.
