GrayBarns on the Silvermine River | The Classic American Inn

GrayBarns on the Silvermine River is home to the Inn, Tavern, Barn and Mercantile! The classic American Inn, with a strong heritage and history, and stunning design, is the perfect weekend getaway for New Yorkers seeking refuge from hectic city life as well as others in search of the idyllic New England getaway.

The Inn at GrayBarns boasts six beautifully appointed king suites with luxurious full baths, bedrooms and living areas. With a nod to Silvermine’s prolific past, the original post and beam structure, reclaimed wood and wide board oak floors tie each room to the natural environment. Custom design elements and classic details combined with contemporary fixtures, NEST thermostats, steam showers and soaking tubs, Flamingo Estate amenities, Frette linens and robes, and SMEG and Nespresso appliances reflect a modern home away from home. The rooms also have fireplaces and balconies to really complete the home away from home experience.

Tavern at GrayBarns, the restaurant on property, continues the perfect blend of old and new. Welcoming both Inn guests and locals, the menu features elegant comfort food crafted by Executive Chef Ben Freemole. Dishes like Housemade Pasta with kale, veal and chanterelles or the Rotisserie Chicken with new potatoes and market greens rely on seasonal ingredients from local purveyors as well as the Tavern’s own kitchen garden. The bar and terrace overlook the Silvermine River and Guthrie Pond, while a rustic-beamed dining room with a dramatic stone fireplace lends itself nicely to an intimate evening. A 30-seat private dining room covered porch and courtyard are perfect for a special occasion!

Q&A from the Owners

How would you describe Graybarns in just a few sentences?

"A Haven of Refuge" as it was once coined by founding member of the artist guild, Frank Hutchens. It is a special enclave, a respite that feels palpable from the moment you descend on the property.

Which room is your favorite and why?

The Addision has a set of French Doors with the most magnificent view of Guthrie Pond and the greenspace beyond the Inn. Heaven is waking up in early September and walking directly outside your room to the Adirondacks to start your morning. You might even spot Potter, the local Otter busy building his house for winter.

Do you have any secret spots around the hotel? What makes them special?

The courtyard is no secret, but it is the most romantic place to dine in the Summer. You feel like you've been transported to Europe. The Gray Area is a bit of a local secret. Come sundown, the Mercantile turns into our very own speakeasy with cocktails, cheese boards and board games. If you're lucky, you may even score a frosé pop in the Summer months.

Describe the perfect weekend stay at Graybarns!

Arrival cocktails at the Gray Area followed by dinner in the courtyard at the Tavern. Pick up some picnic items at the Mercantile and head to compo beach or Grace Farms followed by a tour of the Glass House. Swing by GrayGoods for some shopping before settling by the firepit, followed by an in-room massage and some room service. Let yourself be leisurely on Sunday in front of the fire or lounge on the balcony followed by a brief bike ride along the Silvermine River and a low-key lunch at the Mercantile before checkout.

What do you want Four Hundred members to know about the property?

GrayBarns is all things nostalgia with a modern and updated ease and luxury. It's the idea of quintessential country escape without the creaky floorboards and mothballs. Our intimate family approach and high level of service lends itself to clients and guests with custom needs and interests. Let us help you plan a fly fishing trip or a Hinkley boat cruise during your stay. Our team's local knowledge and attentiveness makes you feel like you're staying at your favorite friend's house, but you can never overstay your welcome.
